AI in HR – How to Navigate Literacy, Training, and Governance

AI in HR - Literacy, Governance, Compliance

Navigating AI in HR isn’t optional anymore — it’s urgent.
In this episode of GoHire Talks, I sit down with AI advisor and thought leader Bob Pulver to unpack how HR leaders can build real AI literacy, create training programs, and govern AI tools responsibly inside their organizations.

We dig into the evolving world of AI in HR, from data privacy landmines and vendor transparency to the everyday use of tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

Bob shares hard-earned insights on how organizations can adopt AI recruiting tools without compromising employee data or compliance, and why understanding “Responsible AI” isn’t just a legal necessity — it’s an ethical one.

We also talk practical AI toolkits, from AI-powered performance reviews to using generative AI in HR for brainstorming, role playing, and presentation building. If you’re in TA, L&D, HR Ops, or leadership, this episode is your roadmap to navigate the challenges of AI in HR — without getting lost in the tech hype.

Key Insights

  • Start with AI Literacy. HR teams must understand how general AI tools work, not just what they do.

  • Governance Isn’t Optional. AI in HR must be used responsibly, with clear policies on tool usage and data privacy.

  • Training is as Important as Tools. Every employee should know how to use AI ethically, especially with PII or HIPAA-related data.

  • Don’t Outsource Critical Thinking. AI can enhance productivity, but it can’t replace human judgment.

  • Watch Your Vendors. Many HR AI tools are built on public models — transparency matters.

  • HR Must Be Proactive. From recruiting to performance reviews, AI is changing workflows faster than many expect.

The Future of AI in HR: Why Literacy and Readiness Are Now Critical

Bob Pulver doesn’t mince words: “AI is coming for the tasks you’ve always thought were part of your job.” That’s not doomsday talk — it’s a wake-up call.

HR leaders must step up their AI readiness and literacy now, not when a compliance audit or privacy breach forces their hand.

3 AI Tools HR Leader and Professional Can Use Right Now.

Jon and Bob’s favorite tools:

  • ChatGPT – For generating emails, HR policies, job descriptions, presentation topics, etc. The keyword here is “Generating”.

  • Perplexity.ai – Google search alternative, great a deep research, and includes citations for references.

  • Claude by Anthropic – Natural conversation, brainstorming

  • Custom GPTs – Bob built one just for tracking responsible AI legislation

  • Napkin.ai – Need help with visualizations, and charts for a presentation… this is the tool.

Bonus: Canva, Notion AI, Gamma — all packed with built-in generative AI features.

How to Use Generative AI in HR Without Risking Employee Data

If it’s free, it probably means your data is the product.” — Bob Pulver

Using public Gen AI tools like ChatGPT to write performance reviews or proposals without turning off model training? That’s how sensitive data leaks happen.

Check privacy settings! Turn OFF “Help train the model”… this means “Share your data”. With Free accounts, don’t load PII, HIPAA, or proprietary employee or company data.

Vet vendors. Don’t assume “paid” means “secure.”

Responsible AI in HR: Guardrails for Ethical and Compliant Use

  • Create a vetted list of approved tools

  • Include AI training in onboarding (just like data privacy or harassment training)

  • Make vendors disclose how their models are trained

Especially for AI recruiting platforms, governance matters.

From Buzzwords to Buy-In: Building AI Literacy and Readiness Across HR Teams

Most orgs don’t need more tools — they need training.

Bob recommends using an AI Maturity Index to assess readiness and tailor communications and policies accordingly.

What AI Recruiting Tools Can — and Can’t — Do For You

Ask vendors these 3 questions:

  1. What AI model are you using?

  2. Are you training on my data?

  3. Have you been audited for bias?

AI in HR is great — if you can trust the tech behind the scenes.

Challenges of AI in HR: From Compliance to Culture Shifts

AI adoption can stall from:

  • Lack of training

  • Fear of being replaced

  • Zero governance

Don’t wait for HR to get disrupted — lead it. Think augmentation, not replacement.
